Fontanilles City Council recovers Castellum fair
Fontanilles City Council, located in Baix Empordà, is proud to announce the return of the Castellum fair, after three years without celebration due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the lack of casteller groups willing to perform in the square.
The event will take place throughout the day on Sunday, March 19 and will include two main attractions: the Diada Castellera and the Olive Oil Fair.
This year, the Marrecs de Salt, the Merlots de Figueres and the Minyons de Santa Cristina d’Aro will be present to make this festival an unforgettable moment.

A true symbol of the identity of the region. The idea of the concept comes from the end of the Middle Ages, during the festivities, the artists used to make a human tower.
Visitors will also be able to enjoy the Olive Oil Fair, which will be organized as a gastronomic market with around 30 stands offering Empordà, Noguera and Pyrenees oils.
In addition, this fair allows us to discover different varieties of olives and olive oils such as:
- Argudell
- Arbequina
- Picual
- Vera
They will also find, in the Olive oil fair in Fontanilles, flavored oils, oil and Empordà beer, as well as stuffed olives, breaded cheese with oil, Empordà wines and Girona apple juices.

Bellverd, highly regarded as one of the important producers in the region, is pleased to participate in this gastronomic fair for the second time.
This event gives us the opportunity to showcase our product to visitors from all regions, especially from France and Germany.
As in the previous three editions, the organization plans a large parking space at the entrance of the village to pedestrianize the entire center.
In addition to the Diada Castellera and the Olive Oil Fair, visitors can discover other entertainment, leisure and gastronomy activities, such as the popular lunch, as well as the raffle of lots of local products brought by exhibitors.

For visitors coming from outside, it is important to highlight that the city council plans a large parking space at the entrance of the village.
In addition, the organization will pedestrianize the entire center to allow visitors to safely enjoy all the festival activities.

A little history: Fontanilles
The term Fontanilles includes the nuclei of Fontanilles as the headquarters of the municipality and Llabià. It borders Gualta, Ullà, la Tallada d’Empordà, Torroella de Montgrí, Pals, Palau-sator, Ullastret and Serra de Daró.
Almost the entire municipality is formed by an alluvial plain, except on the west side, where there are gentle hills that rise to the top of which the two towns were built.
Llabià is located in a high place, on the mountain range that surrounds the ancient Ullastret lagoon.
The nucleus of the village culminates in a Romanesque church dedicated to San Román, built in the 12th-13th centuries and consisting of a single nave with a semicircular apse and a cross vault.
The village of Fontanilles is located on the top of two small hills. At the northern end is the church and at the top of the central part are the ruins of the old medieval castle.
Between the two hills, several farms and houses are scattered in a disorderly way to shape the town.
The church of Fontanilles is dedicated to San Martín and has a Romanesque structure, although other dependencies have been added over the centuries that hide the initial shape of the building.
The remains of the medieval castle are commonly called “el Castellot” and at its summit, the base of a circular tower can still be seen.
